I did a series of videos looking at the writing of the famous old CRPG series, Ultima, created by Richard Garriot. I examine the overall quality, worldbuilding, characters, themes, and several great narrative tricks that help to pull the player in and improve immersion.
Embedded above is the first video, covering Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar, which was the first game in which the writing became not just a way to tell the player where to go and what to do in order to finish the game, but an integral part of the story, with a unique, non-combat goal for the player and a variety of interesting philosophical tasks and puzzles which were a novel and welcome development in the world of CRPGs.
The unusual structure of the story and heroics of the Ultima games from 4 through 9 necessitated a lot of opportunities for creative storytelling and building characters and the world. I find the stories of 4 through 6 especially to tell a very striking, memorable, and fascinating story, while using some really great techniques to move from one game to the next in a clever and coherent way.
I cover each of the Ultima games in a single video from 4 through 9. So far, I haven't covered Ultima Underworld 1 or 2 because I haven't played them significantly, but that may happen sometime in the future.
