No! The Black Crown turns out to be enjoyable and an excellent read!
What started out sounding like very generic fantasy actually developed its own very unique and compelling voice and narrative, and Douglas plays well with common fantasy tropes, using some of them normally, but subverting enough of them that you never know exactly what to expect.
I fully enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to any reader of fantasy.
